VAN METRE SPONSORS HISTORY PAPER COMPETITION
BURKE, VIRGINIA - Van Metre Companies, a long-time corporate resident of Fairfax County's Braddock District, sponsored a history paper competition as part of "A Look Back At Braddock," a year-long effort by Fairfax County Supervisor Sharon Bulova's office and the Braddock District Council that captured and focused on the history of the Braddock District.
The winners of the competition - Bronwyn Deloach (first place), Miriam Hodgkins (second place) and Julie Tumasz (third place) - were recently announced and given a cash prize at a ceremony held at Supervisor Bulova's office. Participating in the award ceremony were Supervisor Sharon Bulova; Dennis Rourke, Senior Vice President of Van Metre Companies; and Suzanne Harsel of the competition selection committee.
"We take great pride in being involved in the community," said Al Van Metre, Sr., Chairman, CEO and Director of Van Metre Companies. "As a corporate resident of the Braddock District and having just celebrated our 50th anniversary, we were pleased to be able to sponsor the history paper competition."
Local students were encouraged to participate in the history paper competition by submitting a three-to-five-page paper that dealt with a historical aspect of the district. The first, second and third-place winners received $500, $250 and $100, respectively. In addition, everyone who submitted a paper received a gift certificate.
